I read with interest Bob Turner's article on HD Boxx and its ability to accommodate the Panasonic AJ-HDC27V camera (“Thinking outside the Boxx,” January 2002, page 24).

While I'm a big fan of Boxx Technologies and always make a point to stop by their display at NAB, I take exception with Turner's statement regarding “an important new capability that no other product offers” — in this case the ability to edit with the variable-frame-rate AJ-HDC27V. I would refer you to Quantel's web-site, where you will find that iQ, Quantel's flagship HD nonlinear editing system, has been capable of editing with AJ-HDC27V footage for some time.

Still, even though HD Boxx is not the only editing system that's embracing AJ-HDC27V clips, the fact that HDBoxx is able to do this at a price point well south of $100,000 is a notable achievement.

I always enjoy Bob Turner's articles but felt that fairness required a response.
Bob Marvel

Bob Turner responds: You are absolutely correct. While my statement was true when I wrote it, the announcement was made by Quantel a few days after the January issue was completed. I have very close friends at Quantel and I chided them for telling me after I wrote the column.

Thank you for writing, and you are correct that this error does not diminish the capabilities of this product.

Films for Christ article praised

Kudos to your mag for featuring Paul Taylor of Films for Christ in your December 2001 issue (“Evangelical video,” page 106).

I can speak for myself and thousands of others when I say that I hope that the Christian film market will continue to receive more exposure in the non-religious market. Great article, Cody. It was well written and enjoyable to read.

Pro Tools card reinstall required?

I enjoyed Tom Patrick McAuliffe's review of the RTMac in Video Systems (November 2001, page 92).

I have just a couple of questions. Did you reinstall your Pro Tools 001 card? And if so, were there any bugs or problems with Pro Tools?
Christopher Leigh

Tom McAuliffe responds: The RTMac is a good product, and by the time you read this Matrox will have announced a new software version.

I've always believed that it's best to dedicate a machine for a specific chore, so I have one computer for audio production, another for video post, one for business, etc.

Sorry I didn't make it clearer, but no, I didn't reinstall the Digi 001 from Digidesigns or ProTools, so there were no difficulties. However, I did ask around in various news-groups and chat rooms, and I was unable to find anyone who had both installed. It should be no problem, though, so go for it.
