At NAB 2003, Asaca introduces the FireFly DM Series, a non-robotic random access library based on serial ATA drives. The library challenges the industry's leading tape installations, says Asaca, by delivering as many as 48 concurrent strings of data per library at up to 400MBps sustained transfer rate. FireFlies rely on up to four 2Gbps FC ports and scale from 12TB to 48TB, and up to five units can be connected together. Users can mix and match between JBOD and different RAID flavors for storage. Predictive failure analysis features monitor drives for potential failure. If a drive is set to fail, the system immediately makes a “copy” on a spare drive and takes the old drive out of service.
