Low-priced notebooks
While price/performance reaches a new level with Apple's Final Cut Pro software, the cost of the company's notebooks keep some from considering the popular NLE package. Now Apple offers a lower-cost option. In October, it introduced a new, lower-priced iBook series. The notebooks feature PowerPC G4 processors, advanced connectivity via AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth, 256MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory, and slot-load combo drives for burning CDs and watching DVDs. The new iBooks also include Mac OS X version 10.3 Panther and ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics with 32MB of dedicated DDR memory. For connectivity, there's FireWire 400, USB 2.0, a built-in 56K v.92 modem, and Ethernet (10/100BASE-T). The durable polycarbonate plastic case keeps weight down to as little as 4.9lbs.
Price: $1,099 (12in. display model); $1,299 (14in. model) Cupertino, Calif.; (800) MY-APPLE;
